Are we in dangerous situation if we are having a lucid dream? Is it possible that lucid dream can be harmful for us? Are there any consequences?
These are the most common questions that come up to mind to one person that is not fully aware about the phenomenon called Lucid Dreaming.
If lucid dreaming has good influence over our mental health and is used in therapy – that means that is completely safe. We can be confused and upset only if we are having a nightmare, but if we know how to control it that won’t be a problem. In a situation like this, we need to relax our mind and try not to be keen on dreams in which we hurt people. A big role in this plays our mental state and many other factors, such as: how was our day, the events and the people that surround us, our wishes and needs etc.
Many people are afraid that they can become addicted to lucid dreaming, but that is not true because lucid dreaming can be categorized as a technique that takes time to be learned. You can’t become addicted to lucid dreaming, you can just learn how to control your dreams and become conscious, aware about what are you dreaming. Lucid dreaming offers you to run into your subconscious mind and be able to talk to it.
Lucid dreaming can’t be dangerous because it allows you to see yourself, for who you really are and solve emotional issues.
This experience sometimes can be scary. If the person experiences unpleasant dream, if his mental state is not in good condition the person will panic.
Some people enter so deep in their dreams that at the moment in which they wake up they are not sure if that was a dream or is still happening at the moment. If the person is in a bad health condition, if he or she has heart problems this situation can further complicate everything. Even if the emotions are so strong, the person can have a heart attack. But everything depends from the health, the consciousness of the person and the ability to take everything under control.
Lucid dreaming can become a new habit in your life, but sometimes it seems frightening.
People that often experience nightmares are tortured and they don’t feel safe at night. Panic and paranoia doesn’t help in these situations. The person must stay calm and try to come back in reality.
Very important factor in the process of lucid dreaming is the quality of awareness. Sometimes the grade of lucidity is very high and you are aware that it is only a dream, it is happening in your head. You are aware that if you want you can wake up in any time.
In case when the lucidity is on lower level, you may be aware that you are dreaming but not enough to be conscious that the people that are present in your dream and the moments that you are passing through are not real, they are only representations and can’t be harmful.
Some sources reveal that lucid dreams are abnormal or unhealthy. There are some side effects that may occur. Dreams occur in our subconscious mind and it is best to avoid recklessness. In such cases the side effects include:
Distancing – some people feel distanced from the outer world, some of them consider the lucid dreaming as weird or crazy. That’s why this type of people is sometimes closed in their own world and is afraid to share their experience so they won’t be judged.
Dissociation from reality can be present too, because people lose their connection to the real world. In this case people have problems when they want to make distinction between fantasy and reality.
Some people may hurt themselves while they are asleep because some very strong feelings may occur or they may be in shock and panic.
Sometimes the most difficult thing is to wake up when you experience a lucid dream. When people come back to reality they feel exhausted and very upset.
If a lucid dream makes harm on the person that experiences the dream, there are some visible signs such as: difficulties with the process of remembering, illusions about places that you have never been before, inability to recognize some people, we have doubts about the reality of some objects, sometimes you can’t remember some events that were very important etc.
The only thing that can help us to prevent the possible side effects is to try to stay calm, to be aware about everything that is happening at the moment and to exercise this type of skill in order to prevent panic and negative feelings. You will wake up with the thought that it was only a dream.
